A MESSAGE FOR YOU
On Nature XXI
by Martin Vallin
They say history repeats itself. That’s because lessons of the past have been either forgotten or simply ignored to advance personal agendas.
The daily news is plagued with headlines of corruption, criminal warfare, terrorism, violence, and destruction. Our oceans are infested with plastic waste and our planet is dangerously close to the tipping point for a “Hothouse Earth”. But where are we headed and does the end really justify the means? Have we all become jaded and too obsessed with the present, forgetting the future? We seem to be tailspinning into chaos. All this should make us question our humanity and our own personal existence.
It all boils down to responsibility and accountability. That starts with each and every one of us.
We operate in an industry that promotes change, making the new old, and the old new. A system that generates insurmountable amounts of waste and pollution. For an industry that is founded on the principles of beauty, the truth is nothing but ugly.
While some efforts have been exerted to shift toward a circular economy, it is not enough. We must make fashion more sustainable by introducing systemic changes to the way clothing is designed, produced, purchased, and used. We need to focus on quality, not quantity. This is the only way to preserve the survival of our industry and of our planet.
Time has a paradoxical way of showing us what really matters. We hold the power to not repeat the mistakes of the past and shape the future. The time to act is now.
